phæno

Wolfsburg, Germany
November 2005
Architect : Zaha Hadid Ltd, London
Building : 10,220 square meters,
including 4,645 square meters of exhibition space
Total Budget : Over $100 million
Exhibition Budget : $14.5 million

phæno is the largest hands-on science center in Germany. AAI has been involved since its conception in late 1998 when we were invited to advise on the feasibility of the project. In our initial role as consultants, we helped secure municipal funding for the project and we served on the committee that selected the architect. Subsequently, we were contracted to design the exhibitions and undertake a wide variety of other work related to this museum. AAI continues to work for phæno and currently we are designing a water play area for children at phæno. We advised the City of Wolfsburg on nearly all aspects of operating this new science center including architecture, staffing, operations, fundraising, content and exhibit planning. We are solely responsible for the content, selection, design and fabrication of the exhibits and all the other elements of the exhibition, including graphics and lighting.

AAI selected exhibits and fabricators from all over Europe, the US and Canada after visiting dozens of museums, artists and exhibit builders. We worked closely with selected exhibit developers, science museums and exhibit builders to design and build the exhibitions for phæno, utilizing their knowledge and skills to augment the team, speed the work and guarantee the functionality and durability of the exhibits. This has been very successful and typically results in design fees that are significantly lower than standard. While the costs of the building nearly tripled from the initial budget, and delays in the design and construction added more than two years to the project duration, AAI was able to maintain the costs for the exhibition within the original budget. At opening, phæno’s exhibition space included over 253 discrete interactive exhibits and original artworks supported by hands-on workshops, laboratories and demonstration areas.
