Ansel Associates, Inc. was the sole design firm responsible for creating the interactive science exhibitions at phæno, a 110,000 square foot science museum. In addition to advising extensively on the architectural requirements of a science center building, Ansel Associates created the overall design and look of the exhibition as well as being responsible for exhibit selection, exhibition design, interactive exhibit prototyping, fabrication, delivery and installation of the 50,000 square foor exhibition. Ansel Associates successfully assisting with fundraising presentations—helping to raise approximately $6,000,000 million in 2 years. We also advised on operational matters and staffing.
Ultimately, Ansel Associates, Inc. delivered the exhibition, containing over 250 interactive exhibits and commissioned artworks for 500,000 euros (approximately $600,000) less than was budgeted.

Working as a subcontractor to WTG, LLC, Ansel Associates, Inc. produced, negotiated and managed all exhibition related contracts. Ansel Associates did incidental design, including some architectural interface matters. Finally we assisted and managed exhibition vendors during the installation period.

Wiener Stadthalle, Vienna, Austria
Advised concerning the design of an “Edutainment Center” for the Wiener Stadthalle, Vienna, Austria. Analyzed the architectural plan, created a comparative analysis, thematic plan, exhibition budget and staffing plan. Projected an annual operating budget. Provided a prospective schedule and alternative models for the project. Created a 3D computerized model of the space and produced a report with our findings.
The Northern California Natural History Museum, Chico, California
AAI produced a short, detailed document describing attendance patterns and operating models for The Northern California Natural History Museum. We also provide a counsel concerning the start up of the institution as well as several alternative models. The report was funded by The California State University at Chico.
Science Alive, Christchurch, New Zealand
AAI served as a catalyst and otherwise greatly aided Science Alive in opening its doors for the first time. Joe Ansel guided staff in selecting and designing interactive exhibits, created and outfitted an exhibition production shop and actually built the Science Alive’s first exhibit. Science Alive had no exhibits when Joe arrived and in less that 6 months later opened with over 40 exhibits.
