Ansel Associates' role in the design and management of the exhibition planning, design and fabrication for Exploration Place was concentrated primarily in the area of vendor qualification, contract management and scheduling. We also played an advisory role with respect to technical design of interactive exhibits and were active players in the management of the exhibit fabrication process. Ansel Associates was regularly on-site for the entire six month period of the exhibition installation to provide supervision and active hands-on assistance to the various exhibit builders, theater companies, lighting designers and installers and other contactors involved in the process of completing this project. Milton McClaskey, who subsequently came to work for Ansel Associates, Inc., was at the time the project manager for Gyroscope, who were contracted for the exhibition concept and designs for Exploration Place. In this role, Milton was responsible for: creation and maintenance of the exhibtion budget; advising the designers on construction techniques and costs for the exhibits and exhibition furniture and structures; researching companies, materials and equipment required for the exhibitions; finding, qualifying and managing the many exhibit contractors; and soliciting bids and negotiating prices for the supply, fabrication and installation of the exhibits. He was also responsible for scheduling and management of the exhibition fabrication and installation, including conducting of progress reviews and site visits with the exhibit contractors and other suppliers. In addition, Milton worked directly with the project architects and engineers to resolve the integration of the exhibitions , including some very large and complex built-in structures, into the building. Among many other things, he created the electrical and plumbing layouts required by the exhibition and monitored the placement of these utilities during the construction of the building. Ultimately, the exhibitions for Exploration Place were delivered on-time and approximately $150,000 under budget.
